BROOKLAND, AR — (BrooklandNews.com) — Feb. 12, 2026 –The Brookland City Council discussed whether businesses should use emergency lock boxes after a request from the Brookland Fire Protection District during its Jan. 13, 2026, meeting.
Mayor Jones told the council he spoke with several local business owners about installing lock boxes for fire and emergency access. He said some owners support the idea, but they do not want it required. They prefer it to remain optional.
City Attorney Kevin Orr said the Brookland Fire Protection District should handle any rules for existing businesses. He said the city should not force current businesses to add lock boxes through a city ordinance.
For new businesses, the council agreed to add a note in the building permit packet. The note will inform developers about the option to install a lock box for emergency access.
Lock boxes allow fire and police crews to enter buildings without breaking doors or windows. The council did not take formal action and said the issue could be discussed again if the fire district moves forward with a policy.
