WASHINGTON — (BrooklandNews.com) — Aug. 2, 2025 — A new jobs report keeps unemployment numbers steady, while President Trump has fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total nonfarm payroll employment changed little in July, with a gain of 73,000 jobs, far below expectations.
The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.2 percent. Employment increased in the health care and social assistance sectors, while federal government employment continued to decline.
President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social about the new numbers: “In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad.”
After attacking the numbers, Trump fired Erika McEntarfer, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), claiming McEntarfer “faked” the numbers.
“McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under ‘TRUMP.’”
Until Trump appoints a new leader of the BLS, Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski will serve as Acting Commissioner.
McEntarfer passed Senate confirmation in January of 2024 for a four-year term, 86-8.
