WASHINGTON — (BrooklandNews.com) — May 21, 2025 — President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Tuesday announced the launch of a new missile defense initiative called the “Golden Dome.”
The system, inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, is designed to intercept missiles “even if they are launched from the other side of the world” and “even if they are launched from space,” according to the announcement.
The project is expected to cost nearly $175 billion and will be overseen by Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, vice chief of space operations for the U.S. Space Force. Funding for the project will include $25 billion allocated in the proposed Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is currently facing setbacks in the House of Representatives.
“I promised the American people that I would build a cutting-edge missile defense shield to protect our homeland from the threat of foreign missile attack, and that’s what we’re doing today,” Trump said, adding that the system would be completed by the end of his term.
While the concept is not new, dating back decades, Trump framed the initiative as “completing the job that Ronald Reagan started 40 years ago.”
Trump also claimed that Canada had expressed interest in joining the project. “Canada has called us and they want to be a part of it, so we’ll be talking to them. They want to have protection also, as usual,” he said during the announcement in the Oval Office.
Details of the plan remain limited, and defense analysts have raised concerns about the scale of the project. The United States is roughly 463 times larger than Israel, and with Canada potentially involved, the coverage area would expand significantly—by another 453 times.
