Tallahassee, FL- On Saturday the NAACP issued a travel advisory for Florida.
According to a press release from the NAACP, the advisory “comes in direct response to Governor Ron DeSantis’ aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools. ”
Florida passing what opponents call “Don’t Say Gay” bills, which the NAACP says this is also a reason for the advisory.
Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO tells NBC that “you have an individual who’s leaning toward running for the presidency. The nation must be aware and be cautious that if we decide to move in this direction, it would take us backward to the Trump years or the 1950’s.”
The NAACP says the state is “openly hostile towards people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.
The travel advisory was initially proposed to the Board of Directors by NAACP’s Florida State Conference. NAACP’s collective consideration of this advisory is a result from unrelenting attacks on fundamental freedoms from the Governor and his legislative body.
The Florida Travel Advisory states, “Under its current Governor, the State of Florida has engaged in anall-outattack on Black Americans, accurate Black history, voting rights, members of the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, women’s reproductive rights, and free speech, while simultaneously embracing a culture of fear, bullying, and intimidation by public officials.”
The NAACP says they have many members in Florida.
