Washington — (BrooklandNews.com) — May 18, 2025 — Former President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to his staff.

The release characterized the prostate cancer as “aggressive” while noting that it is “hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”

The diagnosis came on Friday following “increasing urinary symptoms.”

Prostate cancer is graded on a scale from 1 to 10 based on how abnormal the cells appear compared to healthy ones. President Biden’s cancer was rated a 9, indicating one of the most aggressive forms. The statement also noted that the cancer has spread to the bones.

Biden, during his vice presidency and presidency, has vowed to find a cure to cancer, following his son, Beau Biden’s, death from brain cancer in 2015.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

The former president exited the White House four months ago, after dropping out of the race for president in July and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. He cited concerns that his continued candidacy could distract the Democratic Party and hinder efforts to defeat Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump reacted to the news in a post on Truth Social: “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris also reacted to the news saying, “Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time. Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.” The post featured a photo of Harris and Biden in the Oval Office.
