Washington — (BrooklandNews.com) — Apr. 30, 2025 — A fee could soon be an annual fee that passenger vehicle drivers must pay, a draft bill suggests.

The House Transportation Committee, in a draft bill, suggested a $20 annual fee for passenger vehicles. The bill is set to be marked up on Wednesday.

It’s not only a $20 fee, but also a $200 registration fee raise for electric vehicles, and a $100 fee for hybrid vehicles. The committee estimated that it would bring $50 billion within 10 years, The Independent reported.

This would be done in an effort to eliminate the federal gas tax, which is 18.4 cents a gallon and hasn’t been adjusted since 1993.

It has received pushback from multiple republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, who said it wasn’t a priority.
