Washington — Former Representative Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination by President-elect Donald Trump for U.S. Attorney General on Thursday.
Gaetz withdrew following rising controversy and questions about his past and as to if he would be confirmed by the Senate.
Trump said Gaetz believed he would be a distraction to the Trump-Vance administration, which led to him withdrawing his nomination.
Soon after, President-elect Trump nominated Pam Bondi for the position of U.S. Attorney General.
“Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again,” Trump said on Truth Social. “I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Bondi, 59, has been a longtime friend to Trump and has a background in law, compared to Gaetz.
From 2011-2019, Bondi served as the Florida Attorney General and was the head of a number of cases during the time.
Many have labeled the new pick as ‘more conventional’ than Gaetz citing her past.
Senate republicans has already began to weigh in positively on the new pick, after some were left with questions after the Matt Gaetz pick for AG.
If confirmed by the Senate, Bondi would become the third woman to serve in the role.
