USA– The Justice Department announced on Thursday that it submitted a rule to the federal register to close the “gun show loophole.”
The so called loophole is a term used speaking about private firearm sellers that do not require a federal background check of the buyer, known as a private sale exemption.
In a post on X Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “Under this regulation, it will not matter if guns are sold on the internet, at a gun show, or at a brick-and-mortar store: If you sell guns predominantly to earn a profit, you must be licensed, and you must conduct background checks,” Attorney General Garland also said, “This regulation is a historic step in the Justice Department’s fight against gun violence. It will save lives.”
The rule would change the private sale exemption and require those selling at flea markets, gun shows, and online to register for a license to conduct a federal background check.
Multiple senators have already announced that they will be pushing against the rules. The Hill reports Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Thom Tillis will introduce a joint resolution to overturn the rule.
