MEMPHIS, TN — (BrooklandNews.com) — June 27, 2025 — The Memphis International Airport is to soon begin the process of getting a name change, following the death of FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith.
“We are honored to be tasked with this well-deserved recognition for him. There are many regulatory, logistical, and operational steps involved in renaming an airport, but our staff will immediately begin the process,” the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority board said in a news release.
The new name still remains unclear, though the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority board approved a measure to begin the process of renaming the airport after Smith.
Frederick Smith died on June 21, 2025, at 80. He had founded the popular shipping company FedEx, whose air freight division is based out of Memphis International Airport (MEM).
