Brookland, AR — The City of Brookland looks to be a step closer to opening its’ two parks.
During a December city council meeting, David Loggins, Councilmen and Chairman of the Parks Committee provided an update to the two parks. Loggins said that there was significant progress and that they could open soon.
One of the parks will be located at the intersection of Smith Street and Bernis Street, while the other will be on East Nelms Street.
The parks are equipped with walking and biking trails, playground equipment and parking. During the city council meeting, Mayor Kenneth Jones discussed the parks being opened from sunrise to sunset, and the minutes there was “no opposition to this.”
The city has been planning to build two parks and a sports complex for nearly three years. This all came about following the City of Brookland receiving a grant from $225,000.00 from the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, during Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson’s term in office.
The grant was apart of a $3.6 million larger grant which allowed cities across the State of Arkansas to build outdoor facilities.
The City of Brookland had also planned opening a sports complex, while funding has been a large determining factor in the speed of construction. The city had begun dirt work on the complex and held bids for phase two of thep project which would construct things including concession building with plaza, three lighted ball fields, access drives, parking lot paving, and park sign.
The bidding for that phase had been held in June, while it remains unclear if the city accepted any of the bids.
It still remains unclear the exact opening date of the parks.
